Emergency crews respond to Hazmat situation on a vessel at state port | News

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Crews with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a call of a possible chemical leak at the state port Monday morning around 10:00.

According to Battalion Chief David Hines, units found there was no leak at the port, but the Port Authority said crews with the Port Authority police, WFD and Coast Guard are involved in a potential hazardous materials situation.

According to Coast Guard Public Affairs in Norfolk, VA, the port notified the Coast Guard when a 619 ft. freight named Star Fraser pulled into Wilmington.

Hines said there was a leak on the vessel about ten days ago at another
port. That leak has since been cleaned up and taken care of, but four crew members of the ship took a cab to the hospital Monday morning.

Petty Officer First Class Brandyn Hill said two went
to hospital because of proximity to the chemical spill that happened 10 days ago.
The other two suffered from smoke inhalation from a welding project.

The Port Authority said the situation was on the vessel at the port and is contained to that vessel only. There is no known risk to the environment or surrounding areas. Crews are working to determine what the substance is.
