NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The list of those calling for County Commissioner Brian Berger to resign is growing yet again.
The NHC Republican Party has officially asked Berger to step down and seek mental help.
Berger did not show up to Saturday's annual GOP conference at the courthouse in Wilmington, according to party Chairwoman Rhonda Amoroso.
She said the members present passed a resolution censuring the elected leader and calling for his resignation from the board of county commissioners.
According to Amoroso, the party decided that action against Berger needed to be taken.
"Brian exhibited poor judgment, his actions have caused embarrassment for commissioners and the NHC GOP," said Amoroso. "As a government employee, he has a job to do and if he's not performing his duties, he needs to do something else."
A portion of the resolution reads: "... BE IT RESOLVED, that the NHC GOP hereby censures and repudiates the actions of Brian Berger and calls for his immediate resignation as a member of the County Commissioners."
The move comes only a day after Woody White, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, called on Berger to resign.
Amoroso said the party discussed this issue one year ago when Berger was dealing with legal issues. At that time, the vote was tabled. But Amoroso said this time the party needed to take action right away.
"Brian is a big distraction and we have a lot of work to do," said Amoroso. "We have real issues to discuss so right now we are going on record and calling for him to resign."
According to Amoroso, the NHC Republican Party cannot legally remove him from the party because of due process of the law.
