Mattress Firm donates to local charity for its grand opening

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Mattress Firm will open its doors to the public at 10 a.m. Friday.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., with Mayor Saffo in attendance as well as a representative from the Chamber of Commerce.  

According to the store's manager, James Clark, the store will collect donations for the Domestic Violence Shelter and present a certificate to a representative from the shelter.

Poker run will raise money for Hampstead man diagnosed with cancer

NEW HANOVER, BRUNSWICK and PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A poker run will take place soon to raise money for a local man with cancer.

Matt Thomas, a Hampstead father and husband, was diagnosed with leukemia in March, according to event organizers.

The poker run, scheduled for May 11, will start at Billy Goats on Market Street in Wilmington, and will stop at Slainte in Hampstead, Daddy’s Place, Flounder’s Saloon and Half Time in Leland.

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) - A local charity is in the running to get some big bucks, and there's still time to vote.

Adopt-an-Angel is in the top 200 for a $25,000 State Farm Grant.

The group encourages pet adoptions in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens of teams are getting ready for the 2013 Walk to Defeat ALS.

This year's event is taking place on Saturday April 20. Regsistration is at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 9:45 a.m. The walk starts at 10 a.m. at UNCW's Greene Track & Field.

Finding a cure for this disease is a personal mission for my family. My brother Keith was diagnosed 4 years ago. ALS has robbed him of so many things. He can no longer move his arms or legs and barely moves one hand. Keith has recently started having trouble talking and just breathing is now difficult. it's like he is trapped inside his body, his mind is completely intact.

NHC firefighters raise highest total during the 'fill the boot' campaign

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Fire Department raised the most money during the “fill the boot” fundraising event for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by any fire department in the state.

According to a press released from the deputy fire chief, New Hanover County Fire Rescue and the New Hanover County Professional Firefighters Association raised $51,278 during the campaign, thanks to residents.

"The support of our community was overwhelming," said Lieutenant Ben Bobzien, who coordinated the department's three-day campaign. "The commitment of our firefighters and the generosity of our community allowed us to exceed our goal and receive this honor - but most importantly helping the MDA." 

According to a press release, MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.

Concert to benefit local charity

Concert to benefit local charity

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A composer and concert pianist will hold a benefit concert later this month to benefit the non-profit Welcome Home Angel, which works to improve the quality of life for children with illness or injury in the area.

Roya Weyerhaeuser is planning the concert for March 16 at 8 p.m. at Thalian Hall.

Work on Wilmington calling for volunteers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Work on Wilmington is calling for volunteers to help make a difference in the community.

The group is asking for volunteers to give up their time and help with their 6th annual service day on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to noon. No specific skills are required.
