Got-Em On Live Bait Club donates $5,000 to CFCC

WILMINGTON - Board members of the Got-Em-On Live Bait Club recently presented the Cape Fear Community College Foundation with a $5,000 donation to begin funding an endowed scholarship for Marine Technology students at CFCC. The donation was funded by proceeds from the club's 15th annual golf tournament held in December at the Echo Farms Golf Club.

Once fully funded, the Got-Em-On Live Bait Club Endowed Scholarship will provide financial support to marine technology students at CFCC, with preference given to graduates of the South Brunswick High School Mose Lewis Aquaculture Facility.

Local non-profits help ring in the New Year with a day of service

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - LINC(Leading Into New Communities), FoodCorps, Feast Down East, VISTA, and Corporation for Public and Community Service have come together to host a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event for Monday, Jan. 21 . This event will take place at LINC farm located at 222 Division Drive near the airport from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 According to the press release, the day will be spent clearing and preparing this future urban farm for spring planting. Community volunteers, students, and corps members will pitch in for this event.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer.  After volunteers finish their farm duties, a celebration meal will be prepared by senior corps volunteers from the Wilmington area.

OrthoWilmington surgeons offer pro-bono joint replacements

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – OrthoWilmington is taking part in Operation Walk, USA, a humanitarian organization that provides free hip and knee replacements for patients who cannot afford the surgery.

The four physicians of OrthoWilmington who specialize in joint replacement will join the efforts to perform these pro-bono surgeries.

The official end date for Operation Walk, USA was in December, but OrthoWilmington will continue to do the surgeries for previously selected patients over the next few months.

According to their website, Operation Walk USA assists US citizens and permanent residents who do not qualify for government assistance programs by harnessing a national network of volunteer hospitals, physicians, nurses and physical therapists who are passionate about their work and willing to assist with this effort.

NHC schools work together to raise nearly $39K for United Way

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County schools raised close to $39,000 as a result of their participation in the annual United Way of the Cape Fear Area campaign, according to a spokesperson on behalf of the school system.

The campaign is said to be the most successful one in more than eight years.

"The United Way helps fund education, economic and health programs that are offered to community members,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley in a statement. “Many community members that rely on these programs come directly from the NHCS family. It's encouraging to see our employees ban together in generosity to give to this campaign.”

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – With the recent events in Connecticut, communities around the country and world are trying to honor the victims and Wilmington is no different.

You may have already heard of The Olivia Act, which was created and named after one of the children killed in Newtown.

A photographer, who wishes to be anonymous, came up with the idea.

Brunswick plant employees to donate more than 250 bikes

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Employees at Duke Energy’s Brunswick Nuclear Plant will take some time this week to deliver more than 250 bikes and helmets to children in the area.

According to a press release, the bike drive supports requests from 42 schools in Brunswick, Columbus, Pender and New Hanover counties. School officials help determine the need for each school.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of Brunswick employees,” said Jimmy Blackburn, program coordinator. “The team here has made this program successful through the years with both financial support and through pick-up and delivery of the bikes and helmets to area schools.”

The bike drive started in 1997 when an employee approached another about buying a bike for a deserving child in an area school.

The bikes will be delivered to the following schools:

New Year’s Eve masquerade will benefit Wrightsville Beach victim group

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – If you don’t have any New Year’s Eve plans yet, consider going to an event that will raise money for a good cause.

A black tie event will be held at the St. Thomas Preservation Hall, located at 208 Dock Street from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Money raised will go to The Centre of Redemption in Wrightsville Beach, a group that offers housing, education, counseling and more to women who are recovering from sex trafficking.
