YMCA offers free swimming program

DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Family YMCA is offering a community water safety and swim lesson program called Swim for Life, according to a news release.

The program will begin Sunday, October 28 and will be held for 2 consecutive weekends.

Registration is free and open to all kids and adults.

Don’t miss the 5th annual Zombie Walk

WILMINTON, NC (WECT) - The fifth annual Zombie Walk will take place this weekend in downtown Wilmington, aiming to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina.

Last year, the walk provided over 2,000 meals through the Food Bank, according to a news release. Organizers are hoping to gain some more zombie patriots this year.

The walk will begin at Soapbox Laundro Lounge, located at 255 N. Front St.

Makeup will begin at 1 p.m., and after the transformation, the walk will began at 4 p.m.

Donate an old cell phone to help a soldier

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Students at UNCW working towards earning a minor in leadership are collecting cell phones for soldiers throughout October.

Anyone with old and gently used phones is encouraged to donate them to one of several collection locations on campus by Oct. 26:

  • Admissions Office
  • Cameron School of Business
  • Center for Activities & Involvement (CAIC)
  • Computer Information Systems Building (CIS)
  • Fisher Center Information Desk
  • Friday Annex
  • Randall Library
  • Wagoner Hall
  • Watson College of Education

According to the UNCW Facebook page, cell phones and monetary donations will also be collected at the following upcoming events:

Fish Fry benefits children's hospital

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The 44th annual Shriner’s Fish Fry took place Wednesday morning.

The fund raiser helps to support the Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals.

They spent the day frying fish and volunteers offered their assistance to keep things moving along.

Some volunteers are former patients of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and thought this is one of the best ways they can give back to the community.

“I try to volunteer at the different ones to try and show them this is why you're doing what you're doing,” explained Christina Smith who had her leg amputated and was a regular at the hospital for 14 years. “This is why you're getting up at 6 o'clock in the morning, this is why you're out here spending the whole day one your feet frying fish. It’s to help children like me.”

Coastal Horizons Center receives federal grant

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Coastal Horizons Center in Wilmington has received a federal grant of $1.6 million.

Congressman Mike McIntyre said the center is on the frontlines of helping citizens and building a better community.

“These federal funds will help them continue their core mission of ‘promoting choices for healthier lives’ and providing services of those in need. Congratulations to Margaret Weller-Stargell and all the great folks at Coastal Horizons for their work in securing these funds,” said McIntyre in a press release.

The $1.6 million congressionally-appropriated funds were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to Coastal Horizons for mental health and substance abuse services.

Fill the Boot campaign to benefit nonprofit group kicks off today

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — It's time again to Fill the Boot for the Wilmington Fire Department.

According to a news release from county officials, firefighters will be at assorted locations throughout New Hanover County on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and they are asking you to be generous with your dollars and loose change by filling up their boots with donations.

The money raised will go towards the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which is a nonprofit group aimed to cure muscular dystrophy.

Autism support group holds fundraiser

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - An organization that helps children with Autism and their families reached out to the community for a little help this afternoon.

Oasis North Carolina, a non-profit organization, held a fundraiser at Slainte Irish Pub in Downtown Wilmington.

The group helps children build social interaction skills, confidence and self-esteem with a number of events and programs throughout the year.
