New Hanover County Schools mourns the loss of assistant principal

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Macy McRae, Jr. was the assistant principal at Williston Middle School. He passed away over the weekend at the age of 67.

According to a NHCS news release, Mr. McRae was an integral member of New Hanover County Schools for nearly 17 years. He began his NHCS employment as a Career and Technical Education Director in September 1994. He later moved into the role of assistant principal at Rachel Freeman Elementary School of Engineering in 2003 and has served as assistant principal for Williston Middle School since 2008.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Monday, June 27 is National HIV Testing Day and the New Hanover County Health Department is offering free, confidential testing all week.

Residents ages 13-16 are encouraged to include HIV testing in their routine preventative care.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Have you ever wanted to build your own boat? Now is your chance!

Participants can sign up for the “Build-A-Boat” event at Cape Fear Community College on Thursday, July 23 in downtown Wilmington from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. As part of the 2011 CFCC Boat Show, teams of amateur boat builders will spend a day with an experienced boat builder to build a full-size row boat in just one day. No previous experience is necessary and participants get to keep the boat when they are finished.

Registration costs $450 per team and pre-registration is required. Each team must have a minimum of two people, but four people are recommended. All proceeds benefit student scholarships.

Crying woman lures driver to pull over, three men attack

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Wilmington Police Department officers responded to a 911 caller who reported that three men were pulling a man from his car and beating him Wednesday night.

The victim claimed he pulled over near 4th and Harnett Streets in downtown Wilmington to help a woman who was on the sidewalk crying. The woman reached into the car and pulled his keys out of the ignition. Three men approached, began hitting him and took his cell phone and wallet.

When officers arrived, they spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect and followed him to an apartment at 412 Harnett St. They reportedly surrounded the building and knocked on the door. When others inside opened the door, officers entered and took the suspect into custody.

Justin Marcel Covington was charged with common law robbery. He is in custody at the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $5,000 bond. The others involved in the robbery are still at large.

Volunteer drivers needed at New Hanover Regional Medical

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — New Hanover Regional Medical Center has opportunities for volunteers who are interested in driving the courtesy van or shuttle carts.

Courtesy van drivers take passengers between the main NHRMC campus and nearby offices. Defensive driving class is supplied to participants. A valid North Carolina driver’s license with no violations is required.

Shuttle service drivers can volunteer on either the Cape Fear or New Hanover campus, transporting patients and visitors from parking lots to entrances.

Shrimpfest in Wilmington this Saturday

Shrimpfest in Wilmington this Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Fill up on calabash style shrimp this weekend at the Cape Fear Presbyterian Church’s 4th Annual Shrimpfest.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth and families.

"We want this to be a fun time for our community, but to also reach out to those children and families in need," said Neal Richardson, 2011 event chair.

In addition to delectable shrimp, the event will feature ‘The Logging Chef’ Dave Mueller from Swamp Loggers.

There will be a 22-foot waterslide for the kids, bounce houses, horse rides and several area mascots, including Sledge from the Wilmington Hammerheads.
