WDI encourages NHC residents to vote ‘yes’ to baseball

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The subject of a proposed baseball stadium in the Port City has been at the center of controversy for a while, with both supporters voicing their opinions.

In November, voters will get the chance to make their opinions on the matter clearer than ever -- they must approve a $37 million bond referendum in order for the stadium to be built, and now, a local group is coming forward to encourage voters to say ‘yes.’

Wilmington Downtown, Inc. announced its position in a news release Friday afternoon.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is looking for interested county residents to apply to be appointed to several boards and committees, according to a news release from a county spokesperson.

Citizens are encouraged to apply for spots in the following:

  • NHC Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee
  • NHC Board of Health (Category: professional engineer)

'Why Vote?' event at CFCC

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Cape Fear Community College is hosting an event Friday to address the importance of voting in the upcoming election.

The “Why Vote?” event is open to the public and will be held in room S-002 in the McLeod Building at the downtown Wilmington Campus from 10 a.m. to noon.

According to CFCC, speakers include political science instructor Greg Arey, history instructor Bob Brennan, and SGA president Jamir Jumoke.

Candidates consider future of economic development

All six candidates discuss their visions for economic growth in New Hanover County.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Voters have a better idea of where the six candidates for New Hanover County Board of Commissioners stand on economic development.

A forum Tuesday night covered topics ranging from global warming and the arts community to film incentives and Minor League Baseball.

The evening began with the future of the former WASTEC facility. Current commissioner Jonathan Barfield reminded everyone that he supported a deal with Covanta to reopen the incinerator. The deal was voted down 3-2 by commissioners.

Democratic candidate Rob Zapple said the board's rejection of the deal was distressing and a surprise.

"They left us with no strategy for the future.," he said.

Others seated on the forum expressed a concern with last minute questions about flow control that seemed to stop the Covanta deal after months of research and work from staff.

More than $900K to go towards ILM Airport

More than $900K to go towards ILM Airport

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Federal money in the amount if $900,408 will be going towards security enhancements at Wilmington International Airport, according to a news release from a spokesperson on behalf of U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre.

Congress reportedly appropriated the amount via the Department of Transportation.

“Security improvements and enhancement are critical to passenger and airplane safety and these federal funds will help the Wilmington Airport in both regards,” said McIntyre in the release. “Congratulations to Director Jon Rosborough and all the fine folks at the airport for their work in securing these funds.”

The money will be used to build fencing around the runways and permiter of the airport to help keep people and animals out. Officials say it will be newer, taller and more secure.

The 'Values Bus' makes a stop in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dozens of people gathered at Battleship Park Tuesday for a Bus Tour Press Conference.

The Heritage Foundation and Family Research Council are on a road trip in an effort to spark conversations about critical issues with citizens and leaders.

The foundation focuses on raising awareness on the trillion dollar deficit. They want to fix the debt, cut spending and restore prosperity.

They believe "strong families and a strong economy will lead the way to restoring prosperity."

Local leaders, elected officials and special host Chad Adams from the Big Talker were at the event.
