Group dissatisfied with aspect of 'Iron Man 3' production pickets Friday shoot

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Not everyone is happy that Iron Man 3 is filming in the Port City.

A handful of members of the American Federation of Musicians protested outside of the entrance of one of the movie's filming locations Friday afternoon.

Group members say Marvel Comics makes million of dollars in tax incentives, and that the company takes care of all cast and crew members, just not musicians.

“The Avengers, budgeted at $200 million – as is Iron Man 3 – grossed nearly $1.5 billion in worldwide box office revenue less than a month after its release,” said a group spokesperson in a press release. “Disney’s assets stood at $74 billion in 2011 with reported net income of $4.8 billion on revenue of $40 billion. Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 for $4.24 billion. Disney CEO Bob Iger earned $50 million in 2011.”

Rep. McIntyre not endorsing presidential candidate, focusing on local issues

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Congressman Mike McIntyre is staying clear of endorsing a presidential candidate for the November election.

Rep. McIntyre said Saturday afternoon that his focus is on the congressional race and not other races. McIntryre said his efforts will be on eastern North Carolina and making it better for the people who live and work in the state.

"We've always been steadfast in our work for eastern North Carolina and I'm grateful because we've had Republican and Democratic friends who have supported us because they know my heart is there and it's not about a party agenda or any other person's agenda," McIntyre said. "Our focus is on the congressional race in eastern North Carolina."

Several months ago, McIntyre would not say if he would endorse President Barack Obama for reelection.

Commissioners moving closer to WASTEC solution

Commissioners moving closer to WASTEC solution

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It has been over a year since New Hanover County Commissioners voted to shutdown WASTEC, but Monday they could be one step closer to reopening the waste facility.

Commissioners will hold a 4 p.m. work session to discuss a proposed contract with Covanta Energy Corporation to take over the WASTEC Facility.

After the work session, Commissioners will meet for their regularly scheduled meeting in which the public will have a chance to give their opinion on the proposal.

This decision was put off from their last meeting, which was when Commissioners were told about a large increase to the price of operating the plant.

Renovations to WASTEC would allow the facility to process 500 tons of waste per day. It would cost $12.8 million every year to operate and maintain, but it would create its own electricity. It is still unclear how trash would get hauled and who would pay for it.
