Law enforcement makes several arrests in drug operation

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Detectives with ACE and the Criminal Conspiracy Unit wrapped up a month long investigation in the area of 11th and Orange Streets.

According to police, the operation stemmed from several citizen complaints in the area about drugs.

Authorities were able to gather enough evidence during the investigation to secure warrants on several people for selling narcotics in the area.

Police arrested and charged the following:

  • 3 counts of possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine
  • 3 counts sell/deliver cocaine
  • 3 counts possession with intent to sell/deliver controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school
  • possession of drug paraphernalia
  • driving during revocation

Plants added to Ann Street in streetside rain garden

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Nearly 30 plants will be added Wednesday afternoon in a new streetside rain garden on Ann Street, near the intersection of Ann and Ninth.

After school students and staff from the MLK Community Center and neighborhood residents will join NC State University staff in the planting process.

According to a news release, the rain garden will temporarily hold and filter stormwater runoff to remove pollutants and reduce flooding in Burnt Mill Creek.

Mattress Firm donates to local charity for its grand opening

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Mattress Firm will open its doors to the public at 10 a.m. Friday.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., with Mayor Saffo in attendance as well as a representative from the Chamber of Commerce.  

According to the store's manager, James Clark, the store will collect donations for the Domestic Violence Shelter and present a certificate to a representative from the shelter.

NHC Commissioners agree to give WAVE loan

WAVE Transit representatives say they are having a hard time paying their bills.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - WAVE Transit representatives say they are having a hard time paying their bills. Monday, New Hanover County Commissioners voted in favor of loaning the company money to hopefully keep the bus service running smoothly.

WAVE representatives said they have cash flow problems, the federal and state governments reimburse WAVE for most purchases, but the transit authority says they need the money to spend in the first place.

Sponsor drops out of Battleship Blast, city considers filling the price gap

The City of Wilmington will vote Tuesday to fund the cost of fireworks for the 4th of July Battleship Blast.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The City of Wilmington will vote Tuesday to fund the cost of fireworks for the 4th of July Battleship Blast.

In the past, the city would contribute $10,000, the battleship $5,000 and the rest coming from the title sponsor of the event.

Organizers of the event were recently notified the sponsor was dropping out this year, leaving a $15,000 gap. City Council will discuss contributing $25,000 to fill the need.

The City is working to find a new sponsor, but says they must vote on the money now to ensure that there will be a show.

City Council will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Also, who can turn down checking out the camels motorcycle maniacs, trapeze artists and the of course the human cannonball.

The two hour event is considered to be the world's largest circus show under the big top and if you'd like to attend here are some details.

NHC recognized for energy efficient courthouse

NHC recognized for energy efficient courthouse

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County was recently recognized on a national level for its energy efficient courthouse.

According to a spokesperson for the county, the National Association of Counties (NACo) released a report that established its rankings for "Energy Efficient County Buildings: Realizing Money and Energy-Saving Opportunities."

The rankings were calculated by the energy use intensity of the buildings.

"I'm proud that New Hanover County's judicial building is among the top 10 energy efficient courthouses," said NHC Manager Chris Coudriet." Our participation and this achievement is representative of our sustainable management and good governance of the public's resources."

New Hanover County joined NACo’s Courthouse Energy Program in 2006. New Hanover County currently has 22 buildings in the Portfolio Management System.
