Locals look for facts to make informed decision on baseball stadium

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The City of Wilmington held a meeting Tuesday night to reveal general areas of where the potential baseball stadium might be located.

Citizens were invited to the meeting to give input about the possible location of the stadium.

Representatives from National Sports Services, the firm retained to investigate the feasibility of a baseball team in Wilmington, led the meeting.

The firm has been gathering data since they were hired and are now looking for public input.

Officials announced at the meeting that they hope to have feasibility study done by June 15. By the week of June 11, they plan to have a draft. By June 19, they're aiming for a final delivery to council to vote on Mandalay Baseball's proposal.

WILMINGTON NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Veterans’ Council and the Pilot Club of Wilmington are putting together a Memorial Day Luminary Program on Monday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m.

This event will take place at the POW/MIA Memorial Park on the Wilmington River walk and is open to the public.

Luminaries are $5 each and will represent the memory or honor of a veteran or current service member. Bed and breakfast permit holders can rest easy

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Council members in Wilmington decided during their meeting Tuesday night to hold off on making any decisions that would change how bed and breakfasts operate in the city.

An issue came to light when a resident wanted to open a new B&B but was told there were no more permits available. City staff found that over half of the current permit holders were not actively operating B&Bs.

Some members of Council felt that current permit holders should have to reapply after a certain time to prove that were operating a B&B

Council wanted to hear more input from residents and B&B owners before they made a final decision.

8th annual child abuse prevention event to be held at Henrietta Dock

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Come out to the Cape Fear Riverside and celebrate the 8th annual child abuse prevention flower launch on Wednesday, April 25. This event will start at 4:30 p.m. and will be held at the Henrietta Dock.

According to a press release, the New Hanover County Child Abuse Center is inviting the public to celebrate those who nurture and protect the children and to honor this year’s outstanding child advocate. Parking will not be available next to the Henrietta.

Car slams through healthcare facility

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A car crashed into Interim Healthcare early Friday morning, driving through some glass windows.

According to police, the driver was traveling home from work at UNCW and either fell asleep at the wheel or had a health problem.

Officials said the woman was conscious, but her condition is unknown at this time.

Police say charges are pending.

According to its website, Interim Healthcare is the nation's oldest proprietary national organization that provides healthcare to all skill levels in all settings. They have more than 300 independently owned franchises nationwide.

Three public workshops planned to talk about bicycle, pedestrian trails

Three public workshops planned to talk about bicycle, pedestrian trails

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Three public workshops are planned for area residents to talk about the Wilmington/New Hanover County Comprehensive Greenway Plan.

Each of the following workshops will feature the same information, according to Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Executive Director Mike Kozlosky:

  • April 16, 4-7 p.m. at the Wilmington City Council Chambers, located at 102 North 3rd Street
  • April 18, 4-7 p.m. at Carolina Beach Town Hall, located at 1121 North Lake Park Blvd.
  • April 19, 4-7 p.m. at Ogden Elementary School, located at 3637 Middle Sound Loop Road

Residents will have a chance to comment on the development of “greenways,” which include bicycle and pedestrian trails, water-based trails for canoeing and kayaking, and preservation corridors that will serve as open space.

Project consultants and staff members will be on-hand at each of the events to answer questions gather input.

More than 800 cited during 'No Need 2 Speed' campaign

More than 800 cited during 'No Need 2 Speed' campaign

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than 12,000 people were cited during the “No Need 2 Speed” campaign earlier this month, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

“State and local law enforcement agencies made a tremendous effort to make our highways safer and to remind motorists to obey the speed limit during this campaign,” said Becky Wallace, director of GHSP.

A total of 13,435 drivers were cited for speeding during the campaign, and a total of 39,150 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.

There were a total of 840 traffic and criminal violations in New Hanover County.  Of those, 408 drivers were cited for speeding and 27 were cited for DWIs.
