North 3rd St. improvement project information meeting planned

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The City of Wilmington's gateway on North 3rd Street will be under construction beginning the first week of August.

An informational meeting about the project will be held on Wednesday, July 20 from 5:30 until 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, according to a news release from the City of Wilmington.

The $9.4 million joint project between the city and the Cape Fear Public Utility involves the replacement of aging water and sewer lines, the placement of power and other utilities underground, and new street paving, sidewalks, curbs, crosswalks, lighting and traffic signals. Funding for the project includes $5 million from the 2006 transportation bond, $1 million from city construction funds, $2.4 million from the Utility Authority and $1 million from the state.

The affected area stretches from Market Street north to Davis Street. The 13-month project will begin the first week of August at Market Street and move north.

Temporary lane closures can be expected and temporary traffic detours to side streets may be needed at some points during construction, especially during road repaving. Intersections will remain partially open whenever possible.
