TRAFFIC ALERT: Expect delays as crews lay pavement

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Drivers should expect to see Market and Third Streets closed Monday while crews pave the area.

According to the City of Wilmington, the paving is part of the final stages of the North Third Street Improvement Project.

The road will remain open to traffic during this time, but several intersections and side street closures will occur.

Monday, Oct. 29:        Intersections of Market/Princess/Chestnut streets will be closed.

Tuesday, Oct. 30:        Grace/Walnut/Red Cross/Campbell intersections will be closed.

PPD Beach2Battleship to cause traffic delays

The PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon will be held Saturday.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Police Department is working with event organizers for the PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon to ensure participants will be safe and the traffic tie-ups are minimized.

There are two significant hotspots that will cause traffic delays within Wilmington city limits.

1-  Residents who live along the Eastwood Road/Military Cutoff section of the bike course will not be permitted to come out of side streets onto the main road while cyclists are passing through.

2-   Drivers are asked to exercise extreme caution at the intersection of Third and Greenfield Streets all day Saturday, as runners head into and out of the seven-mile loop around Greenfield Lake. Organizers estimate the first runners will begin to appear around 11 a.m. and the last could pass through 12 hours later.

CFPUA conducts sewer repairs Wed. night

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Crews with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will conduct sewer repairs at the intersection of S. Front and Wright Streets Wednesday night.

According to CFPUA, the repairs will begin around 8:00 p.m.

Traffic flow will be maintained in both directions, but drivers can expect temporary lane shifts while repairs are underway.

Crews have scheduled this work to coincide with the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge closure in an effort to minimize traffic impacts.

CFPUA expects the repairs to be completed within four hours.

More parking being developed in downtown Wilmington

More parking being developed in downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – An empty gravel lot next to the City Parking Deck in downtown Wilmington will soon become public parking.

A development company in Wilmington recently bought the property and is in the process of creating a 21-space parking lot.

The developers have installed new lighting in the area and are working on landscaping and installing electronic meters.

The lot will be managed by Lanier Parking and will have similar rates as the parking deck.

Developers say the lot will be open in the next two weeks.

Police identify man found lying in the street

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a death in the area.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department have released the name of a man found lying dead in the street last Friday.

According to Police, James Mitchell Bostic, 64, was found sleeping outside in a sleeping bag back near Third and Kidder Streets.

Neighbors said Bostic usually spent most of his time outdoors and are not sure what happened.

Someone reported Friday morning that the man was found lying in the street in front of a truck. Authorities say when they arrived on scene Bostic was dead.

The police department is waiting on a toxicology report, which could take weeks to process.

No other details have been confirmed at this time.

Fill in the blank: 'Before I die I want to _______'

Chang wrote "Before I die I want to _________," to encourage the people in her community to reflect on their lives and share their aspirations with the public.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Cape Fear Community College will be the temporary home of an interactive art project that invites people to share their hopes and dreams in a public space.

Artist Cindy Chang used the experience of a lost loved one to help clarify her life, but she struggle to maintain perspective.

With guidance from friends she turned the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans into a giant chalkboard. On the side of the home, Chang wrote "Before I die I want to _________," to encourage the people in her community to reflect on their lives and share their aspirations with the public.

Her artwork has grown to a national level and large chalkboards were installed at Cape Fear Community College. The chalk boards will be displayed on campus throughout the month of October.

Hillcrest Community Center hosts ‘Senior citizen Sit Down Dinner Affair’ on Friday

 

Wilmington, N.C. (WECT) - If you are 50 years of age or older, join the Hillcrest community center for a Senior Citizen Sit Down dinner Affair from 4- 7p.m. on Friday.

Expect a night of fun with friends, music and a full course meal. Entertainment will be provided by Bishop E. Williams.

This event is held at the Hillcrest Community Center on 1402 Mears Street. Children are not allowed to this event.
