Taxi spots downtown get a fresh coat of paint

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –The city of Wilmington is moving forward with plans to paint some parking spaces downtown - in an effort to keep drivers from blocking the taxi stand.

We started following the story a few months ago - when cab drivers complained that drivers were parking in their reserved spots.

The city has ordered the materials - and workers will soon paint the words "no parking after midnight" in the spots.

The taxi stand is for shuttling people out of downtown on busy bar nights - and to prevent drinking and driving.

Dram Tree Park opens in time for Labor Day

Dram Tree Park opens in time for Labor Day

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dram Tree Park will reopen Friday, just in time for the Labor Day weekend.

Crews have added more parking spaces for cars and boat trailers, in addition to open space. The project also included the installation of an underground stormwater retention tank that allows stormwater runoff to go into the ground instead of directly into the Cape Fear River.

The City of Wilmington began work on this phase of improvements in March, but completed the first phase of renovations in October 2010.

The project is a joint effort with Progress Energy and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, who helped fund the restoration.
