NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Commissioners in New Hanover County will discuss spending up to $300,000 to tear down parts of the former WASTEC facility due to safety concerns. Last August, an engineering firm noted that certain parts of the facility would not meet current wind criteria.
The repairs would have been included in a contract with Covanta to refurbish the facility but that agreement never happened.
In order to keep on site employees safe, county staff is requesting the stack and flues at WASTEC be removed "expeditiously."
County staff is recommending Commissioners vote to accept bids on the project and move forward as long as the bids come in under $300,000. If the bids are higher, county staff will present an updated recommendation to the board at a future meeting.
