Saunders believes she is just the person for the job because of her time served in the classroom as an elementary school teacher and assistant principal. She says one of her main goals on the board is going to be closing the gap in graduation rates.

She also has concerns over school funding as well. Saunders is focused on keeping the teachers in the classrooms for the sake of the student's education.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Rotary Club celebrated a partnership with Williston Middle School on Tuesday.

The two established programs through the Williston Legacy Project that will honor community members who have had a significant impact in the Cape Fear area. Co-chair Donna Shiro talked about the importance of Williston Middle School to the Club during an event at the school.

“We have done a lot of things with youth in the past. I mean our club is 96 years old,” she said. “We’ve done things with the YMCA, the YWCA, and the Boys and Girls Home. But this time, we decided we wanted a long-term project that we could put our stamp on and say Williston is our baby and we’re going to take care of it.”

The Wilmington Rotary Club was established in 1915 and has close to 200 members.
