New barber school starting at CFCC | Schools

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- Cape Fear Community College will begin offering new barber training classes later this month.

Beginning on Jan. 14, CFCC's barber school program will provide students with the skills to become a professional barber. Over the course of 12-14 months, classes will prepare students for the North Carolina Board Exam which will result in an apprentice license. Upon completion of the program, successful graduates will be qualified to work in an entry level position in a professional barbershop.

The program will be a combination of traditional lecture and hands-on training which will be held in a barbershop setting located at Emerald Square on Wrightsville Ave.

College officials say that public demand for a conveniently located barbering program has been increasing in recent years.

"Individuals and human resource organizations such as vocational rehabilitation have urged us to begin the program.  People interested in the barbering profession have been traveling over an hour to the nearest approved training school,”  said Diane Badakhsh, CFCC's corporate and continuing education director.

“Barbering is a high demand, recession proof career that allows professionals to be their own boss and generate their own income.  In many cases, a person's income is only limited by their own skill and initiative,” Badakhsh said.  

After one year of apprenticeship following the program, the graduate will be eligible to take the N.C. state exam to receive his or her N.C. Registered Barber License.

Space is limited to a maximum of 20 spaces in the day program that begins the first half of January. The college will also be adding an evening program, dates and times to be announced later.
