Gravity Records participates in Record Store Day festivities on Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — Gravity Records music store is inviting the public to Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

This one day event celebrates independently owned stores by bringing together artists to celebrate the art of music.

The store, located at 125 S. Kerr Ave., will reportedly be offering limited edition releases, as well as door prizes from various local businesses.

Over 700 record stores across the country and hundreds internationally are expected to celebrate Record Store Day, according to a press release. Ozzy Osbourne is also serving as this year’s official ambassador for the event.

“This is a chance for everyone to learn more about what music is out there and all that we have to offer here at Gravity Records,” said owner Matt Keen, in a statement.

Walgreens Wellness Tour makes a few pit stops in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour is coming to several Wilmington stores throughout this week.

The schedule is listed here:

  • April 14: Walgreens store located at Medical Center & 17th Street, noon until 6 p.m.
  • April 15: Walgreens store located at Pine Valley/College & 17th Street, noon until 6 p.m.
  • April 16: Relay for Life event located at Ashley High School, 6 a.m. until noon
  • April 17: Walgreens store located at Oleander & College, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • April 18: Walgreens store located at Porter's Neck/Market Street & Porter's Neck Road, noon until 6 p.m.

According to a press release, the Wellness Tour will offer all adults 18 and over six free health tests (bone density, cholesterol, glucose, blood press, waist circumference and body mass analysis). No appointment is necessary, results are immediate and tests are expected to take 20-25 minutes.

The free tests are conducted inside the vehicle and are valued at $100. Additionally, free one-year AARP memberships will be given to all adults who receive tests.

Downtown library branch closed Saturday for Azalea Festival

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The downtown Wilmington branch of the New Hanover County Public library will be closed Saturday, April 9 for the Azalea Festival, according to officials from New Hanover County.

All other branches are expected to be open on their normal schedules.

Former Azalea Belles' gowns on display in Castle Corner Antiques windows

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Do you want to see the beautiful gowns that the Azalea Belles wear up close? Two gowns from past festivals will be showcased in the windows of Castle Corner Antiques, located at 555 Castle Street near the corner of 6th Street, for a limited time.

Gowns that will reportedly be shown were worn in 2008 and 2010 by Maggie and Beth May, the daughters of John and Dr. Jeannie May.

Riverfront Farmer's Market gives customers a sneak peek

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Riverfront Farmer’s Market will kick off the season this weekend with a market preview Saturday.

Every year the market plays host to local farmers, producers, artists and crafters.

The official opening day is April 16.  It will be open every Saturday until December 17, except for the weekend of the Riverfest celebration.

The market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  It’s located on Water Street between Princess and Market.

VITA program offers free income tax preparation this week

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County is reminding citizens that free income tax preparation will continue this week at the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center, the main public library and the Carolina Beach Recreation Center.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program reportedly helped over 4,400 taxpayers receive more than $3.5 million in refunds from the IRS last year.

Free tax preparation available

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County residents can get help completing their taxes this year. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), sponsored by Retired & Senior Volunteer Program at the New Hanover County Senior Resources Center, is offering free tax preparation. There are three locations available this year:

  • The Senior Resources Center, 2222 S. College Road (Open Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • New Hanover County Public Library, 3rd and Chestnutt Streets (Open Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.)
  • Town of Carolina Beach Recreation Center, behind Town Hall (Open Tuesday & Thursday from 3-7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m.)
