Coast Guard Auxiliary to offer boat safety course

SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - According to a new release, The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a safe Boating Course on Saturday, April 20, May 18, June 22, July 20 and September 14. 

In addition to these classes, a special class for paddle sports will be held on June 1. All classes will be held at the Progress Energy Media Center on River Road in Southport.

UNC Asheville basketball coach to speak in Wilmington Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The head men's basketball coach for UNC Asheville will speak at the Greater Wilmington Sports Club this Friday.

Eddie Biedenbach has been head coach for the past 17 seasons, making him the longest-tenured coach in the history of the Big South Conference. He also holds the record for the most wins in the conference.

The luncheon will begin at noon Friday at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.  It'll cost you $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

March Madness: A coach’s perspective

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The men’s basketball coach at UNC Asheville will be the keynote speaker for the Greater Wilmington Sports Club luncheon this Friday.

The luncheon’s theme is “March Madness: A Coach’s Perspective.”

The 2012-13 season will be Eddie Biedenbach's 17th as head coach of the UNC Asheville men's basketball program. He is the longest-tenured coach in Big South Conference history.

The event will be held at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside and feature a seafood buffet luncheon beginning at noon. The program will take place 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Children's Museum of Wilmington to host FORE the Children Golf Tournament

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Join the Children's Museum of Wilmington as they host the 2nd annual FORE the Children Golf Tournament Monday, March 25 at the Cape Fear Country Club, according to a news release.

There is an entry fee of $200 per golfer and $800 per foursome. The fee includes a golf cart, access to the practice range, a gift bag, a beverage cart, lunch and appetizers.

The money raised from the tournament will support The Children's Museum and its efforts toward early literacy and S.T.E.M. programs, according to organizers.

WPD, WFD to square off in charity ice hockey game

WPD, WFD to square off in charity ice hockey game

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Fire Department will compete in a charity ice hockey game at The Icehouse Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6:45 p.m., according to a news release.

This year, proceeds will benefit construction of the WFD Memorial at the Empie Park Fire Station. Next year, proceeds will go to a police department charity.

Local heroes hit the ice for charity game

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Some of our local heroes will hit the ice for an annual charity game.

The Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will take on the Wilmington Fire Department and EMS on Feb. 23.

Officers and deputies will face off against firefighters and emergency officials in an ice hockey game at the Wilmington Ice House.
