Golf, comedy fundraisers to be held for memorial honoring firefighters

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A golf tournament and comedy show will soon be held in honor of fallen firefighters in Wilmington and those lost on 9/11, according to a press release from a spokesperson on behalf of the Wilmington Fire Department Memorial.

For the first time ever, members of the Wilmington Fire Department will team up with local businesses to host the HomeTown Heroes Golf Classic.

The golf classic will have a firefighter or “hometown hero” in each group of four. Individual teams of five will compete in a captain’s choice tournament for prizes.

The golf tournament will be held Monday, May 21 at 9 a.m. at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course, and sponsors will also receive tickets to the Marion Karr Comedy Show.

Bridge to Bridge 4-mile run/walk scheduled

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Both the Cape Fear Community College Foundation and Sea Devil Athletics will be hosting the NewBridge Bank Bridge to Bridge 4-mile run/walk on Thursday, June 14, according to a press release from a CFCC spokesperson.

Participants will travel from the Isabel Holmes Bridge to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and proceeds from the event will benefit CFCC students with books, tuition and other expenses.

Awards will be given to winners, and after party will be held with food, drinks, prizes and more

The registration fee for runners is $25 until May 31, and $30 from June 1 until the day of the race.

The cost is $20 for walkers until May 31, and $25 from June 1 through the day of the race.

Additionally, shirts are guaranteed to those who register by May 31.

The start time is set for 6:30 p.m., and onsite registration is from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The race will begin at CFCC’s Schwartz Center, located at 601 North Front Street.

Rotary Clubs to hold spring fundraisers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Rotary Clubs of Wilmington will be hosting two fundraisers, the Daffodil Run Walk 5K and Art in the Garden at Greenfield, to raise money for a special project at Greenfield Lake Park May 5, according to a release from Rotary Club officials.

Participants have the option to run or walk in the 5K, explore the Art in the Garden Festival, take paddleboat or canoe tours, and visit the Cape Fear Garden Club, Inc.’s Fragrance Garden.

The fundraisers benefit The Rotary Wheel Beautification Project at Greenfield Lake Park. For more information on the project, click here.

Slam basketball registration open until May 8

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Slam basketball registration will be open in Wilmington until May 8.

The cost to register is $10 and forms may be completed at the Martin Luther King Community Center, located at 401 S. 8th Street, according to an announcement.

Slam basketball is open to youth ages 14-18.

Free physicals offered for prospective student athletes

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students who plan to participate in athletics in New Hanover County will need a mandatory physical examination.

Free exams are being offered at the New Hanover County Health Department, located at 2029 South 17th Street, for prospective student athletes.

Exams will be held on Thursday, May 24 for boys and on Thursday, June 7 for girls, according to a post on the New Hanover County Schools website.
