TRAFFIC ALERT: Expect lane closures on North Third Street Tuesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – According to the city’s website, There will be brief lane closures on sections of N. 3rd Street between Market Street and Hanover Street from 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.

This is necessary so the city can have samples of pavement from the completed N. 3rd Street Improvement Project.

Accidents by the numbers at Fifth and Market

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Drivers can't seem to avoid the Kenan Fountain in downtown Wilmington, and now, the North Carolina Department of Transportation could be aiding in the effort to enhance the intersection at Fifth and Market.

A study by the states Department of Transportation shows 71 accidents have happened around the fountain since April 2008. Only 19 of them involved a driver directly damaging the fountain, with all but one of them happening at night 

Wilmington City leaders approved more than $8,000 earlier this year to add extra lights to the intersection. Now, the DOT is making some suggestions of its own.

DOT reps are expected to present their findings to the Wilmington MPO, along with plans for new lights, signs and lane markers.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said he welcomes any effort to protect the Kenan Fountain and secure the busy intersection. He said he doesn't mind making more changes.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Cape Fear Memorial Bridge expected to go up Tuesday morning

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It will be a busy day along the Cape Fear River.

According to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Tender, the bridge is expected to be up at 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 30. 

A large tanker is leaving town, so the bridge will go up at 10:00 a.m. Also, the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is coming into town causing the bridge to go up again at 10:45 a.m. 

Expect delays in and out of town between 9:45 and 11:00 Tuesday morning.

CFPUA workers inspect, clean sewer lines downtown; expect detours

Traffic will be detoured in parts of downtown Thursday as workers with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority clean and video sewer mains, according to a CFPUA spokesperson.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Drivers in Wilmington should steer clear of Cape Fear Public Utility Authority crews downtown Thursday as crews inspect and clean sewer lines.

According to officials, workers are inspecting and cleaning sewer lines in an eight mile block in that neighborhood.

Spokesperson Mike McGill says they'll be using a small line with a camera to give them a better idea of any problems with blockage or cracks. They'll video 200 feet at once  then clean 50 feet at a time.

McGill says it allows them to proactively fix problems before they happen and they can note any problem areas that would need long-term repairs.

Workers will be on N. 16th Street between Chestnut and Rankin Streets and on Grace Street between N. 15th and N. 17th Streets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – One lane on Oleander Drive near South College Rd. will be closed on Wednesday, April 17 to Thursday, April 18. This closure will talk place from 9am to 4pm each day.

North Carolina DOT crews are working on the right hand turning lane heading northbound on Hawthorne Drive.

Add extra time if you are heading that way.

Cardinal Drive closure extends through the week

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – According to the city’s website, Cardinal Drive between Market Street and Eastwood Road will be closed until Thursday April, 18th.

City Crews are installing drainage pipes under the road.

This closure has been in place since April 8th. Officials had to extend the closure this week due to the rainy weather.

The website also states, residents of Long Leaf Acres and Inland Greens will have access to their property either from Market Street or Eastwood Road all week. The storm water improvements will connect with the drainage system adjacent to the Port City Community Church and help alleviate flooding in the Inland Greens neighborhood.

NCDOT to hold public meeting to discuss a temporary closure on 3rd Street

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Thursday, April 18 the North Carolina DOT will hold a public meeting to discuss the temporary closure of Third Street in Wilmington.

The meeting will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the city of Wilmington Council Chambers, Thalian Hall, located at 310 Chestnut St. Citizens are welcome to drop in anytime during those hours and speak individually with NCDOT officials.

According to the news release, NCDOT proposes to close Third Street for several months beginning in the fall of 2014, while crews replace an aging pipe used for overflow from Greenfield Lake.  The pipe is under Third Street and South Front Street.  In addition, the department proposes to improve pedestrian and bicycle access at this intersection. 

During the road closure, traffic will be detoured. The work is expected to be complete by spring 2015.
