TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane Closures on I-40 and N.C. 133/ N.C.117 bridges next week

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - According to a press release from North Carolina DOT, crews will work on routine inspections on the I-40 and U.S. 117/N.C. 133 bridges over the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County on Monday, April 8 through Friday, April 12.

The inspections will require closures on the east and westbound lanes on I-40 bridge and on the U.S. 117/N.C. 113 bridge between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day.

Drivers should plan for extra time crossing the bridges.

Roll over accident result of hit and run

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Authorities are searching for a driver they say hit a Jeep and fled the scene late Tuesday night.

The accident happened near the Hardee's on Carolina Beach Road near the intersection of Shipyard Boulevard.

The crash caused the Jeep to roll over. WECT spoke with the driver who appears to be okay. He says another driver hit him and took off.

The accident is being investigated.

StreetSafe is pulling into Wilmington

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – StreetSafe is pulling into Laney High School next weekend.

The StreetSafe Life Saving Driving experience offers a unique hands-on driving session designated to make teens safer and more responsible on the roads.

The event is taught by police and first responders and focuses on parental involvement. The goal is to reduce the number of crashes, injuries and deaths by young drivers.

Space is limited and preregistration is required to attend. Click here to register, there is a $30 fee.

The event will take place at Laney High School, Saturday, April 6, 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Parents are required to attend the first hour of the session, and students must have driving experience.

Overnight lane closure on U.S. 74 West near 23rd Street

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina DOT is closing down the right lane on U.S. 74 West at the bridge near 23rd Street over Smith Creek on Wednesday, March 20.

The closure begins at 9pm and will last until 2am Thursday, March 21.

 The lane closure is necessary so crews can work on maintenance for the bridge.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Lane closed overnight on US 74 near 23rd Street

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina DOT is closing down the right lane on U.S. 74 West at the bridge over 23rd Street on Monday, March 18.

The closure begins at 9pm and will last until 2am Tuesday, March 19.

According to the press release, the lane closure is necessary so crews can replace a crash attenuator – a device that reduces the impact to the bridge when it is struck.

Man crashes car into home, charged with DWI

A vehicle crashed into a house at the intersection of Fourth and Ann Streets around 3 a.m. Friday.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A car slammed into a home at the intersection of Fourth and Ann Streets in Wilmington early Friday morning.

According to police, an officer saw the vehicle speeding down Fourth Street prior to the crash. The officer had notified dispatch he was going to make a traffic stop when he noticed the car hit a house.

The homeowner, Edie Senter, was upstairs at the time. She said the car first hit a tree that she planted 11 years ago when her daughter was born.

"We told her this morning, Ella, your tree saved us cause the police told us it took the initial impact of the car," Senter said. "So, it helped the house not get as much damage."

Police say Nathan Gregory Leemhuis, 22 of Wilmington, was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving.

Leemhuis posted bond and has been released.

Expect bridge closures overnight for filming

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Just a remdiner...the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is expected to have intermittent overnight closures this weekend while film crews work in the area.

Weather permitting, the bridge will close for no more than five minutes at a time Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 from 7 p.m. until 5:30 a.m., according to a press release from the NCDOT.

Drivers should plan for extra time crossing the bridge during those nights and use caution in the area.
