TRAFFIC ALERT: Overnight lane closures on Cape Fear Memorial Bridge

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is expected to have overnight lane closures on Sunday, March, 24 through Wednesday,March 27.  North Carolina DOT crews will work on the bridge deck causing the East and Westbound lanes to close.  

The closures will take place from 9pm to 5am each night until Wednesday, March 27.

Plan extra time to cross the bridge or use the Isabel Holmes Bridge as your alternative route.

Stormwater Project completed at Walnut and Front streets

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - City Crews completed the stormwater project at the Intersection of Walnut and Front Streets in Wilmington. The intersection re-opened Wednesday, March, 6.

According to the City of Wilmington’s website, the project involved replacing underground drainage systems to protect Front Street from cave-ins during heavy rain storms.  

The final step is to add a crosswalk at the intersection during the week of March 11.

TRAFFIC ALERT: One lane closed on Princess Place Dr.

 

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - One lane on the 1700 block of Princess Place Drive will be closed on Monday, March, 4 and Tuesday March 5. This closure will take place 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m each day.  

City crews are removing some of the trees in the area. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic while work is taking place.

Car crashes through porch of a home

A car crashed into a porch of a home on 18th and Queen Streets in Wilmington Thursday around lunchtime.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A car crashed into a porch of a home on 18th and Queen Streets in Wilmington Thursday around lunchtime.

According to officials, a 75-year-old man was driving when he hit a parked car on 18th and Wooster Streets. Authorities said the driver continued down the street and crashed into the porch.

The man was taken to the hospital, but was not seriously hurt.

No one lives in the house, but the property's water line was hit and will have to be fixed.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Market street down to one lane Wednesday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –One out of the two southbound lanes of Market Street between Fourth and Sixth streets in Wilmington will be closed from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

The closure will take place while a crane is being used for work at the First Baptist Church at the intersection of Market Street and Fifth Ave.

 Drivers are advised to use caution in the area and to plan for delays.

Police investigating downtown robbery

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department have blocked off a portion of Downtown Wilmington.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating a robbery that took place Friday, asking anyone with information about it or the suspect involved to contact them.

According to police, the robbery happened at an art gallery in the 200 block of Water Street when a young man entered the store, showed a weapon and demanded an iPad.

He proceeded to grab the iPad and run out onto Water Street, where a Chandler's Wharf employee chased him.

Afterwards, WPD officers converged on the area with K9 units, but the suspect got away. Traffic was blocked from Church Street to Ann Street and from Front Street to Water Street during this time.

Authorities later recovered a BB gun, which turned out to be the robber's weapon, and the iPad near the scene.

The suspect was described high-school aged with dark skin.

He was seen wearing a black hoodie.

Portions of 23rd Street will be closed for sewer repairs

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Crews of  the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will be working on a leaking water and sewer line on 23rd street on Thursday, Feb.21.

All lanes will be closed to traffic between Princess Place Drive and Chestnut Street from 9 am to 3 pm. Residents along the road will have access to 23rd street.

Watch out for delays during this time.
