Remembering the 'Storm of the Century'

More than 18 homes were destroyed in hurricane-like storm surge during what became known as the "Storm of the Century."

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Two decades ago Front Street flooded as the Cape Fear River backed up with intense southerly winds. Water Street was under water and the Battleship North Carolina was above the bulkhead across the river.

More than 18 homes were destroyed in the 70 mph wind gusts and hurricane like storm surge during what became known as the "Storm of the Century."

The storm was one of the most intense in our state's history and set records up and down the East Coast.

It took the lives of 19 people in North Carolina.

Rick Stewart feared for his life as a massive tree fell at his Pine Valley home.

WEATHER: A great Thanksgiving Day forecast!

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – High pressure will dominate much of the southeast bringing sunny skies and high temperatures in the low 60s for Thanksgiving Day. Breezy conditions are expected throughout the day, as well. Winds will peak between 10-15 mph. However, winds will diminish overnight allowing low temperatures to drop into the upper 30s.

Temperatures will climb Friday into the mid 60s and skies will remain sunny. Lows will fall into the low 40s.

A cold front will swing through the area overnight Friday dropping our weekend temperatures into the mid to upper 50s and low to mid 30s at night. The weekend will be very nice despite the minor temperature drop.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

What can I expect in NHC from Hurricane Sandy?

What can I expect in NHC from Hurricane Sandy?

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Now a category one system, Hurricane Sandy has undergone some weakening as it emerges over the open ocean yet again north of the Bahamas near the Florida coastline.

Friday will be one of the most unsettling days as the general direction of Sandy will be in a line straight for the Carolina coastline.  However, the system is likely to get caught up in an advancing cold front that should, in the next 24 hours, move Sandy back to the east – out over the open ocean.

The current National Hurricane Center forecast track, brings the system close enough to the coast to at minimum cause big waves, erosion issues and breezy coastal conditions. Heavy rain will likely be a concern too near the coast, although it is too early to forecast specific amounts.
